California – Road trip to the wild west, first stop: Los Angeles!

Santa Monica Pier, California, USA

California, the American Far West… if there’s a region which is part of our imagination, this is the one. This is the land of Hollywood – the studios, the gigantic cinema industry, the stars, the Oscars, the dreams… We’ve all seen countless movies and TV shows filmed here, and easily remember the ones that left their mark some way (or at least, that almost everyone has seen): starting on old westerns, to E.T., Jaws, Back to the Future, or TV shows like Baywatch… this is an endless list, and all of you will certainly add a new name to it!

We’ve been dreaming of visiting American Far West – California of course, but other states too – for a long time (this was definitely on our wish list). We waited until the kids could endure a long haul flight, and last summer we finally took the decision to go, and there we went! It was a memorable trip, driving around for two weeks and having the time of our lives. The itinerary went through California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah and back to California, we had a great time! We will share this trip with you over the next posts, we hope you’ll enjoy reading about it!

What’s the best place for romance?

Valentine’s day has just passed, and even for the less romantic ones, it is impossible not to think about romance… We don’t usually celebrate the day as we prefer to plan special romantic programs on other days – when everyone else isn’t.  Still, thinking about all those who wanted to have a special Valentine’s, we started wondering what destination would we choose as the most romantic one, what would be the one special place that we would recommend to a couple in love, without hesitating? There are lots of possibilities, and after some debate we couldn’t narrow this to just one… So we give you some of our favourites, and let the romantics decide…

Take a look at the beautiful island of Sao Miguel (Azores), you’ll want to visit it!

This is a destination we love, one of the most beautiful places we’ve been: Azores. The nine islands of this archipelago are extraordinarily beautiful and diverse, so we will speak of them one at a time, starting by the main island, São Miguel.Lagoa Sete Cidades
Start your journey by a visit to the capital Ponta Delgada, a very nice city, where white and grey from basalt are the predominant colours. This is a very calm city, with great and welcoming people, so you’ll enjoy walking around the historic center, buy souvenirs (you’ll find beautiful handicraft), and delight yourself in the numerous restaurants: the food is delicious – fresh fish, sea food, meat, cheese, vegetables.. Whatever your preferences, we can assure you’ll enjoy great meals.

Start exploring the island by seeing the lagoons: Lagoa do Fogo, Lagoa das Sete Cidades… Stop at Caldeira Velha, a magical place not to be missed (a waterfall with hot water). The views along the way are incredibly beautiful, with extinct craters covered by green contrasting with the blue ocean.

Visit Porto, a wonderful city, European best destination 2014!

PortoThis time we travel to the North of Portugal, by proposing you a visit to the beautiful city of Oporto. This is an historical city, its first name – Portus Cale, from romans times – has been the origin of Portugal’s name. It is a city proud of its past, and of the fact that it has never been conquered through centuries of invasions and struggles in the Iberian Peninsula, hence the nickname “Invicta” – unbeaten. It is a lovely city, with excellent food and even better wine, with very opened and welcoming people and a lot to see – its historical centre has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so it is definitely a place to visit.

Discover the unique and magnificent city of Istanbul

IstanbulToday we travel to a unique city, where East and West blend with a surprising harmony: Istanbul. This is the only city where you can be in Europe and Asia during the same day, and wandering through its streets is both a feast to our senses and a dive in the history of civilization.

Given its strategic location, it was the stage of successive invasions throughout centuries, and has absorbed influences from very distinct cultures: it was founded by the Greeks in century IV BC, then came the Persians, the Romans – who named it Constantinople after their great Emperor Constantine, and finally the Ottomans, who conquered it in 1453… All left their marks, which can be easily found in gastronomy, architecture and also in its welcoming habitants.
